Setting Up A Mailchimp account: A Step-By-Step Guide

What IS mailchimp?

Before we learn how to create a Mailchimp.com account, let’s find out what Mailchimp actually is.

Mailchimp is an American marketing automation platform and email marketing service.

This in simpler terms means Mailchimp helps you send emails to a large number of people . All you need is to send one email and Mailchimp distributes it to the remaining emails on your contact list.

The platform is the trading name of its operator, Rocket Science Group, an American company founded in 2001 by Ben Chestnut and Mark Armstrong, with Dan Kurzius joining at a later date.(This information is from Wikipedia.org)

Now let’s go into the business for today 🙂

Creating a mailchimp account

step 1

First of all go to https://login.mailchimp.com/signup/post. You will be taken to the mailchimp.com sign up page.

On the page fill the form with the appropriate answers.

Remember to use an active email account and a username and password you can remember easily.

Note: Some private information in the pictures you will see in this blog post have been crossed out for security reasons

#2. Activate your account

This is the reason I advised you to use an active email when creating your Mailchimp.com account.

After you have filled the form in the first page, you will have to activate your account through a link that will be sent to your email. (i.e.the email you used to sign up)

#3. Log in

After you activate your account, you will be taken to a login page where you will fill in the same username and password you used to sign up.

#4. choose your plan

Select the plan that suits your budget. For the purpose of this blog post, I chose a free plan.

For the plan I chose, I get to send 10,000 emails free of charge and also be able to add 2,000 people to my contact list.

However the free plan expires when you have exhausted all these privileges (i.e. when you have more than 2,000 contacts and or send more than 10,000 emails.

If you’re still starting out though (in blogging or a small business) the free plan is your best option. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t like to save a little money? 😉

#5. Fill in some personal info

In the page above you’ll have to fill in your First name, Last name, Business name, Website URL and Phone number.

In this particular page is where the really personal stuff comes in.

You’ll fill in things like your street address and postal code and all that.

And before you ask let me answer you, YES it is necessary(lol, I wondered so at first as well). They need to make sure your email complies with the international anti spam laws_ how exactly the two relate i don’t even know

#6. CONTACTS

Mailchimp will need to know if you have any contacts. Contacts here refer to emails.

If you have emails you want to be a part of your contact list, just select “Yes” and mailchimp will hep you add them manually. Just select “No” if you don’t have any contacts.

#7. describe your business

When you see a page that looks like the above image, just select the box that best describes what you offer. Are you a blogger? Do you sell? Do you offer your services? Choose the most appropriate.

After selecting what you offer, you have to specify how exactly people can access your offerings(i.e, where your audience and or customers can reach you).

#8. let’s go

In this page, you can choose to subscribe to the different news letters Mailchimp.com provides or not

Click on “Let’s Go”

#9. get started

Congratulations!!! 🙂 you have successfully set up your Mailchimp.com account.

In this page you can choose to connect an e-commerce store to your Mailchimp.com account if you have any, add your contacts if any and you are ready to start sending mails 🙂
